Chapter one � Gold can glitter but it can�t sing
The day was July 27th in the year of the Lord 1862.

It was hard to tell much about the prettiness of her face, as she was covered in blood and dirtier than a miner working a mile down in the hole. Her breathing was shallow and she was out cold and the smell of death hung in the air, but she was alive. He had no time to ponder the scene before him any longer, he needed to get a move on and he needed to do it fast. He pulled his knife from his belt and gently cut the ropes embedded in her flesh, then he lifted her free from the bits and pieces of debris. She was a limp duck and her head fell back over his arm when he lifted her up. He didn't need to strain himself doing it as she was light as a feather but so very fragile the little bitty thing was.
